VOIP or Voice over Internet Protocol, basically means voice transmitted over a digital network. Essentially, what happens is that, you use your high speed internet web connection for better telephone service. The calls are routed to the internet rather than over the telephone lines.

The computer is not required, but the network resources are required. The same protocols or rules that are used for sending data over the internet is used for sending voice transmissions. Data is usually sent over the web in packets. With VOIP, these packets also include the both the sender’s and the receivers MAC or Media Access Control address, along with the voice signal.

Advantages of VOIP

There are many advantages of using VOIP over traditional POTS or Plain Old Telephone Systems. VOIP can be used to make free phone calls.

* Because VOIP uses packets, more information can be sent over the network. The data can be compressed, which now uses less space and time, resulting in lower transmission costs.
* More dynamic routing to others routs if the selected rout is unavailable.
* VOIP works over all kinds of networks, and with any IP enabled device such iPhone, iPads and others.
* VOIP is much faster
* VOIP can integrate all other forms of communications including videoconferencing and audio streaming.
* VOIP runs on computer lines and no other additional lines are required.

It is not outside the realm of possibility to expect that VOIP will eventually replace the traditional telephone systems. The easiest way to use VOIP is calling on your computer. All that is required is the software,a microphone, speakers and sound card along with your internet connection.

VOIP also offers the ability to check voice mail via the Web or to attach messages to an e-mail, which is sent to your computer or handheld device.

Some disadvantages of using VOIP

One of the biggest disadvantages of VOIP is the reliability. VOIP relies on electrical power to keep circuits running. No power to your computer, means it cannot work unless it includes battery operation such as a laptop. This can be easily overcome by using VOIP on mobile devices. Continue reading this post…

The “like” button with the infamous thumbs up symbol has been a very popular app on Facebook. It’s a great way to promote content and an easy way to chime in on Facebook friend’s post.

For every positive feature added to Facebook and other popular online sights, it seems that hackers find a way to throw in a new monkey wrench. Interaction on Facebook is so easy that Facebook has also become a seemingly easy target for scams too.

The latest Facebook scam is the Facebook “dislike” button scam. There was certainly some request for a “dislike” button, an alter ego to the like button, to easily disagree or thumbs down a Facebook post.

If your friend just a bought a new hybrid car you may really “like” it. On the other hand if your friend is now dating your husband a “dislike” button might offer some minimal therapy.

How the Facebook dislike scam works:

Facebook users get a message saying a friend has downloaded “the official DISLIKE button.”

This of course is followed by a link where you can (supposedly) get a dislike button too.

If you click the link and accept the dislike app, you then give this pseudo Facebook application access your profile and the ability to update your status as well as post spam messages from your account.

And the beat goes on… Now the malware post the same message that got you to all of your Facebook friends. Continue reading this post…
